Each time a new Smartphone is released by one of the big brands I wonder, what’s next? And the big fish of the handset industry seem to have answered that question of mine. Flexible displays, it is. Which again leaves me wondering, what’s next? Anyways, let me put aside my curiosity and tell you that the flexible screen is what you need to watch out for. Nokia has already made the Kinetic display concept official at the Nokia World 2011 and in answer to this Samsung will also be launching handsets that have flexible displays. At Digital Experience 2011, Samsung showcased one of its handsets that were integrated with the technology. At the CES Pepcom Event, Samsung launched the first flexible film prototype plastic display which is commonly known as the flexible OLED screen. Samsung Flexible OLED Display handsets
Samsung had a different strategy than Nokia when it came to the flexible screen. Then wanted to emphasize of this characteristic of the screen and thus, when they only showcased these paper-thin displays. These displays will be integrated in the handsets, this year, but the features and specifications of the handset have not been disclosed yet. Later in the year, the Samsung tablet will receive this upgrade.
The display of the handset is made of a material that has pixels. Each of these pixels has the capability to produce light without being connected to the other and this is how the display becomes flexible.
We have to wait for the display to be housed in the handset to see what a wonder Samsung are created.
Nokia Flexible OLED Displays
The Lumia 900 seems to have taken the world by storm, but Nokia seems to have something more in store for its customers in the near future and that is handsets with a flexible OLED display. The Nokia Kinetic device was recently unveiled at the Nokia World 2011 event and the handset had a humungous OLED screen that could be twisted and rolled. Quite attractive, I must say.
The flexibility of the phone was not the only feature that had people’s attention, as the uses of the flexibility were also highlighted at the event. The user interface of the handset in which this display has been ensconced can be controlled with the help of this flexibility feature. The user can zoom in or zoom out on a particular point by folding the screen in the middle or the user can scroll through a list by bending the handset at the sides.
These features left the audience at the Nokia World 2011 overwhelmed as they were witnessing the making of history.
The pros and cons of the feature also came to light at the event. One of the noteworthy positive is that the display can be used even if you are wearing gloves and you need not look at the screen, while you are working with it. The negative side was that you would have to use both your hands while bending the screen.
These are the “phones that fold: flexible OLED screens” that will be in the market in the future. I’m sure that the other biggies who have been manufacturing handsets will take their cue from Samsung and Nokia and create handsets with displays that are based on the same technology
