Ethnically, the majority of Missourians are of German descent. The state also has a sizeable population of . Although the French were the original European settlers in the area, their descendants have largely been assimilated into the "Anglo" group and only a small percentage consider themselves part of a French ethnic group. This makes it difficult to assess the actual number of French descendants among the white population.
