The Internet used to be such a nice place. In the beginning, everyone played nice. They shared information about great websites and worthwhile stuff. Slowly and surely, it began to turn ugly. And with the new ugliness, a whole slew of new words and new definitions of old words were created: Troll, spam, spyware, virus, pop-up, trojan, adware, black hat, worm, malware, pop-under, rage, etc.

There was bad stuff everywhere. Antivirus software was no longer an option; it was essential. Any new file with a .exe became suspect and was quickly quarantined by cautious network administrators. And every piece of email coming in or going out of the servers had to be checked and double checked as a possible threat.

Sometimes I long for the days when the worst you could do to your computer was accidentally drop it off the table.

Who Does These Things?

The worst part is these evils are no accidents. What all these have in common is they were created on purpose. Someone somewhere who is reasonably intelligent decided to create all the evils of the Internet. At least in Greek mythology when Pandora opened the box, she released existing evil–she didn’t have to make them.

And at least most people can understand the underlying reasons for some of these nasty things: pure profit. The online world created a system whereby money can be made for clicking links and visiting sites. With the right trojan or adware infecting unsuspecting computers, thousands of dollars were funneled into the pockets of some real jerks.

Innocent Victims

In its wake, these bad programs taught people to hate, and worst, fear some really useful programs that were accidentally sucked into the fray. Take for example the lowly toolbar. It was a handy tool to let people search the Web and visit popular sites from their browser with one click. Sadly, it got corrupted for a long time, but now they are back and are better than ever.

Online toolbars such as Zugo Bing are reminding us how good toolbars can be. Zugo lets businesses create their own customized toolbars and start pages and give to their customers. The free service lets the business get the branding they want and gives customers the powerful search capabilities, one-click access to sites and quick views of news and weather on the screen no matter what webpage they are visiting.

And best of all, these toolbars come with no evil malware or spyware. The web is still not a safe place, but it is coming back one step at a time.

Yes read it right! Spam becomes a lot worse when you try to unsubscribe from advertisement mails, because the spammers then get to know your email address is real.

If you want to become a big spammer you will need email addresses: millions of them. In order to get them at the lowest cost, spammers use various techniques which automatically search the net for addresses, or use brute force and dictionary attacks to guess typical mail address. Such as strings with common first and last names.

How spammer gets to know about email is active or not?

In order to check the addresses it has found, the spammer uses a peculiarity of the email protocol SMTP, which always answers wrongly with an error message. If there is no error message, the address is known to exist. However to find out if his mails are also being read, the spammer must provoke you to react. Therefore, many messages have fake ‘Remove’ or ‘Unsubscribe’ links which only register the fact that you opened the mail, which means you have seen the spam ad mail.

How you get more spam?

If the spammer has verified your address once, he can start making money from it because he knows you are a potential buyer. Not only does he then send you more spam than before, but also sells your data to other spammers and cycle goes on.

Of the 107 trillion emails sent in 2010, 89%were spam. That means 95 trillion spam mails every year or 262 billion every day.

The Social Network is a 2010 drama film about the founding of the Internet social networking website Facebook. Released on 24 September 2010 (New York Film Festival) is first movie based on social media and had some chronological errors & fun facts like-

Some Fun facts:-

Jesse Eisenberg’s cousin actually works for Facebook, apparently near the real Mark Zuckerberg.
Not a single Facebook employee, including the founders, was involved with this movie.
A year prior to the release of this film, Jesse Eisenberg’s character in Zombieland (2009) stated the best thing he liked about Z-Land was there were no Facebook status updates.
Even though Zuckerberg is against the film, he still allows the movie to have a Facebook fan page.
Because director David Fincher was unable to find any suitable identical twin actors to play real-life identical twins Cameron Winklevoss and Tyler Winklevoss, two unrelated actors were hired to play each brother – Armie Hammer as Cameron and Josh Pence as Tyler. Fincher thought that Hammer looked the most like the real brothers, so for some scenes, the visual effects team photographed Hammer speaking Tyler’s lines and created a computer-generated model of his face to paste over Pence’s. Traditional split-screen work, with Hammer’s separate performances as each brother stitched together in the same frame, was also used.

Anachronisms: During the Valentine’s Day a cappella performance the girl checking her email remarks that she hopes the links she’s being sent come from ‘Cats That Look Like Hitler’ the scene takes place in early 2004, while the website didn’t launch until 2006.
Anachronisms: In the scene after the opening breakup scene, Mark rushes back to his dorm at Harvard, tapping his wallet against the keyless entry system to his dorm. At the time the movie takes place, all Harvard dorms required the ID card to be swiped.
Factual errors: When Mark types email addresses in to tell people about facemash, he writes to several people @harvard.edu. At the time the movie takes place, undergraduate email addresses were all of the form username@fas.harvard.edu. Furthermore, the network brought down by facemash would have been referred to as the FAS network. (FAS stands for Faculty of Arts and Sciences; the eponymous network covered all buildings within the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.)
Anachronisms: The song being played in the nightclub is “The Sound Of Violence,” performed by Dennis de Laat. This song did not exist until the year 2009.
