Various files on the basis of their usage and popularity can be divided into two categories: known file types and unknown file types.

Known file types, include file types that are extensively used, such as the .doc or .xml file type, whereas unknown file types are those files about which not much information is available and are used sporadically. Our efforts in this article are focused on the latter, as we introduce you to three file types which fall into the unknown file type category. Plus, we also discuss in detail how to resolve file errors that you may come across while using files of such type.

• .mpg file extension – This file type is primarily used for distributing multimedia content over the Internet. So you may come across .mpg files while downloading a movie from the web. Most media players, including Windows Media Player, Apple QuickTime, Roxio Creator, and CyberLink PowerDirector support the .mpg file format.

• .cfg file extension – The term ‘cfg’ is short-form for configuration. .cfg files are thus configuration files that are used by numerous software to store configuration and settings data. Typically, you can view .cfg files using a text editor program, such as Notepad.

• .lnk file extension – .lnk files are only used on a Windows computer. These  files contain a link to a program, file, or directory and are used by the Windows operating system to quickly access these entities.

Steps to resolve errors related to unknown file types

The most common file type error message that you are likely to encounter with an unknown file types is: ‘Windows cannot open the file’.

Common causes of this error are:

• The program required to open the file is not installed on the system.
• One or more file openers on the Windows system are damaged.

To resolve the issue, either install the required program or use a reliable file opener program to open the desired file. One advantage of using the latter is that it allows you to fix issues pertaining to damaged or corrupt file openers on a Windows system.

In addition to the above error, you may also encounter file type errors while using the associated software.

This behavior may occur due to missing or damaged application files, or malware infection. To fix the file type error, perform the following steps:

• Uninstall and reinstall the software with which you are receiving the error

If the error is occurring due to missing or damaged application files, the issue can be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the associated software. The reason being, when you reinstall a software all its files are saved and registered again.

• Run a malware scan

Malware infection is the biggest cause of application errors – a fact said often but understood rarely.

To fix file type errors occurring due to malware, run a malware scan on your Windows computer using a robust and compatible antimalware software.

Happy Halloween ! To celebrate, we spent a perfectly good workday carving up a pumpkin PC case, and we made sure to document the process for your viewing pleasure. If you have a few hours this holiday weekend and you’d like to carve your own, click through to see how we did it.

1.Pick Your Pumpkin

Pick out the biggest pumpkin you can find, at least a foot in diameter.

2.Assemble Your Tools

Before embarking on this kind of quest, it’s important to ensure that you have the tools to do the job right–the last thing you want is a leaky pumpkin dripping goop all over your CPU. We used a simple pumpkin-carving kit that shouldn’t cost you more than $10.

3.Build Your PC

Assemble your components and power them up to make sure everything functions before you try cramming the works into an actual pumpkin.

4.Gut Your Gourd

Now that you’ve picked out your pumpkin, carve a lid around the stem and get your hands dirty disemboweling your new case. Make sure to scrape down the sides thoroughly and clean out all the goop to ensure that you don’t get any pumpkin seeds and/or entrails on your components.

5.Carve a Back Door

Instead of trying to finagle our components through the top, we found it easier to carve a nice, wide hole in the rear to accommodate the single largest component of the pumpkin PC (in our case, the power supply). Slip in a waterproof base (we repurposed some cardboard and wrapped it in plastic), and make sure to leave plenty of space for running your power, display, and Internet cables out. If you’re feeling extra crafty, carve the access port in one large, replaceable chunk to keep the pumpkin looking smooth when not in use.

6.Slide Everything In (Lots of Assembly Required)

Once you have everything squared away, it’s time to start building your PC! We divided the project into manageable chunks (in our case, the power supply, motherboard/CPU, and a 200mm case fan) and slid them in one at a time, inserting one hand through the top to steady and assemble everything. We mounted our case fan with a few pieces of high-strength wire inserted into the sides of the pumpkin, but you could achieve the same effect with a little ingenuity and a few bent paper clips. Keep an eye out for detached cables, and make sure that nothing is dangling in the case fan before you power the system up.

This combination system customizer, diagnostics tool, and maintenance utility gathers an enormous amount of detail about your PC, including data about your processor, RAM, display adapter, and hard disk. It also allows you to customize your Start menu, as well as to tweak the desktop, taskbar, Windows Media Player, and Windows Explorer. These aren’t superficial tweaks, either–the program digs down into the guts of your system, permitting you to remove all toolbars from the taskbar, for instance, or to hide the Log Off button on the Start menu. Additionally, you’ll find a good Registry cleaner, a disk cleaner, and a way to stop certain programs from running on startup.

Long ago and far away, Microsoft released Tweak UI, a free tool that customized Windows XP in countless ways. It quickly gained a large and loyal following. Movies, music, podcasts, pictures…your PC may take up less space in your house than your photo albums and your DVD collection do, but that doesn’t guarantee that its contents can’t sink over time into total disarray. For many people, PCs have become the hub for storing family photos, home videos, and music libraries–and without the right apps and tricks, those collections can quickly degenerate into a trackless wilderness. Read on for tips to keep iTunes in line, to avoid stuttering streams, and to automate photo uploads.

iTunes Tricks

1. Auto-add to iTunes: Managing an iTunes library can be a hassle, especially if you download your media from multiple apps. iTunes 9 introduced an ‘Automatically Add To iTunes’ folder (located by default at C:UsersusernameMusiciTunesiTunes Media); iTunes monitors this folder for new files and appropriately sorts the ones it finds. Download new music and videos to this folder, and you won’t have to organize them later.

2. Keep your feeds going: iTunes will automatically stop up­­dating your podcast subscriptions if you don’t listen to them–a real annoyance if you want to listen to a series of podcasts on, say, a marathon road trip. A simple Visual Basic script automatically marks all of your unplayed podcasts as played, causing iTunes to continue updating them. Use Windows’ built-in Task Scheduler to set the script to run every week or so.

3. Clean up your music: You don’t really need four copies of the same song in your iTunes library–even if it’s really good. So select File, Display Duplicates, and start deleting.

4. Create multiple libraries: You may not want iTunes to lump all of your media into a single library. Maybe you’d prefer a family-friendly media library and a separate adults-only media library, or maybe you’d rather not reveal your love of Rupert Holmes singles to anyone else. Whatever the reason, you can use Libra to set up multiple iTunes libraries and switch from one to another at will; with luck, that “RH+” library won’t attract any attention.

5. Speed it up: By default, iTunes has a few performance-slowing settings turned on. To disable the laggards, open the Preferences menu and uncheck any of the following you don’t use: Look for shared libraries (Sharing tab), Look for Apple TVs (Apple TV tab), Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (De­­vices tab), and Look for iPod touch, iPhone and iPad Remotes (again, Devices tab). In the Store menu, turn Genius off.

6. Don’t mess with codecs: If you’re tired of installing and updating audio and video codecs to extend your player’s capabilities, make VLC your main media player. Easily the most compatible media player available, VLC can handle a multitude of file and streaming formats designed for iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player, and more.

7. Prevent stream stutter: Though many factors outside your control could interrupt your video stream (especially if you’re streaming from another user’s PC rather than from
a dedicated service such as Netflix or YouTube), one tweak that may help is to increase the size of your system’s read buffer. This adjustment will make the stream take longer to start, but it can also smooth out some hiccups by introducing a little more latency. In VLC, open the Open Network Stream menu, check Show more options, and bump up the number in the Caching field. In Windows Media Player, choose Options from the Organize menu, click the Performance tab, and manually adjust the ‘Buffering settings‘.

8. Accelerate or slow down podcasts: If you want to play back your audiobooks and podcasts in Windows Media Player at a different speed from the one they were set to play at, you can arrange it instantly via a few keyboard shortcuts. Press Ctrl-Shift-G to make a podcast play faster, press Ctrl-Shift-S to slow it down, and press Ctrl-Shift-N to reset it to normal.

9. Automate photo uploads: Depending on which photo management software and online photo services you prefer, you may be able to upload new pictures automatically. LiveUpload to Facebook can publish from Windows Live Gallery, while Picasa can post anything you put in a Picasa Web Album on the Picasa Website. If you favor Flickr, try Foldr Monitr, which can watch a specific folder for newly added images and post them to your Flickr account. (For more on automating your media collection, see “Automate Your PC’s Media Library.”)

10. Tag photos from Windows: If you have a lot of photos on your PC, you’ll probably want to organize them with a photo gallery app (such as Windows Live Photo Gallery or Picasa). But if you don’t want to deal with an extra application, you can use Windows 7′s built-in metadata support to maintain order among your photos by means of descriptive tags (“Kids” or “Vacation,” for example). Just select the pictures in Windows Explorer, click Show More Details… at the bottom of the open window, click Tags, and type the tags you want to use (separate multiple tags with semicolons). Once you’ve tagged your photos, you can search for them by placing “tag:” in front of your search string.

Not all computer errors are as complex and difficult to troubleshoot as they appear at first glance. One such category of computer errors that are easy to resolve are DLL errors. Now that we know the cause of missing DLLs, you may follow the corrective measures listed below in order to resolve missing DLL errors.

Perform a malware scan

When you receive a missing DLL error, the first thing you must do is to run a malware scan using sophisticated antivirus and antispyware tools to ensure that your PC is not infected. Malware programs are known to delete and modify DLL files, like the msvbvm60.dll and msvcr80.dll files, causing recurring DLL errors.

If a malware scan shows the presence of malicious programs on your computer, immediately remove them to fix the missing DLL error.
