Create Your Own First-Person Shooter Game for Free With Cube 2: Sauerbraten

Cube 2: Sauerbraten is a free multiplayer/singleplayer first person shooter, built as a major redesign of the Cube FPS.

Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eyecandy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine. The engine supporting the game is entirely original in code & design, and its code is Open Source (ZLIB license, read the docs for more on how you can use the engine).

Cube 2: Sauerbraten (free) is an engine/editor for designing and playing first person shooter games, primarily aimed at multiplayer LAN games. It is an entirely open source/freeware project, actively supported and developed, and supports a good set of features, all of which ultimately lead to getting some friends together and blowing each other to bloody gobbets. Good times, good times.

While many systems for designing FPS maps use an editor/engine split, where you engage in an edit/test/edit again cycle, Sauerbraten makes no such distinction. You load up, or create, a map, then press “E” to begin editing it, and “E” again to leave edit mode. At the simplest level, editing consists of extruding or deleting cubes and adding textures, but to create the kind of beautiful maps you can see in screenshots or play as part of Sauerbraten’s distribution package, you will need to master a variety of skills, as well as creating or importing textures designed for your specific needs.

Sauerbraten does not use a standard Windows interface. Most editing in Cube 2: Sauerbraten is accomplished by some mix of “click a key, then spin the mousewheel.” In essence, you constantly shift into different modes. Press “y” to make the mousewheel cycle through textures. Press “g” to make the grid size smaller or larger. Multiple players logged into a map can all edit it cooperatively, allowing teams to work on a project and see each other’s changes happening dynamically.

In some cases, you need as much coordination to edit a map as to frag your friends. For example, bending and deforming corners requires holding down the mousewheel while dragging to select a range, then spinning the mousewheel to edit the corners, all without ever letting the mousewheel up or clicking any of the other mouse buttons. My failure to master this skill meant that I constantly lost my selection, selected the wrong squares, or was only able to perform a partial edit before my fingers slipped.

As with many open-source projects, documentation is sparse and sometimes out of date. There is a forum for asking questions, and I did find it useful, but it uses very non-standard forum software that seems to have fallen through a timewarp from 1998, with a simple list of topics-as-links. There’s a wiki, but it consists mostly of stub articles and partially written guides that tend to make assumptions about prior knowledge.

A fairly basic scripting language (CubeScript) is also part of Sauerbraten. It’s intended primarily for trigger events (such as causing a monster to spawn when you cross a square), rather than scripting advanced AI or adding complex new features. The engine source code, though, is open source, so it is certainly possible to use it as a base for adding additional functionality via more traditional means.

If you’re interested in FPS map design–and aren’t afraid to get your hands a little dirty and experiment a bit to figure out what works and what doesn’t–download Sauerbraten and check it out. Just make sure your mousewheel finger isn’t as itchy as your trigger finger.

This building in Lyon by Paris designer Cyrille Druart houses motor-racing simulators. Called I-WAY, the building also includes a spa, gym, bar and conference rooms. If your a racing fan and maybe visiting France or even live their. How luckys that! take a trip to Lyons to the new I-Way Arcade that took four years to design and build and housing a fleet of 18 6-axis car simulators. Including rally cars and full size formula 1 racing cars.

Three simulation areas: Formula 1, Endurance, Rally/Touring, are located at the heart of the building. Made up of empty concrete cubes, they showcase six simulators per zone with walkways providing access on either side.

I-WAY is located at 4/6 rue Jean Marcuit, in the 9th district of Lyon, France, in a new neighbourhood nicknamed the “digital hub”, on the banks of the Saône River.

There’s A New Graphics King In town! Bring On the DX11 Games-Brief Review

THIS WEEK, AMD’s long anticipated HD5870 GPU, codenamed “Cypress” and the new kid on the ATI Radeon graphics block, took the “fastest GPU chip” crown away from Nvidia’s GT200b in the GeForce GTX285.

Generally, when a product of this magnitude debuts, you hear polar opposite opinions of it‚Äîone from the company selling it, and another from that company‚Äôs competitor. ATI thinks that DirectX 11, stream computing, and Eyefinity are the ultimate combination of killer features for next-generation graphics. The opinions coming out of Nvidia are naturally quite opposed right now (at least until its own DirectX 11 boards are ready), favoring CUDA and the still-proprietary PhysX.

Originally, I titled this piece ATI Radeon HD 5870: Learning From Nvidia’s Mistakes. That was an unfair way to kick things off, I decided. But I still want to explain my justification for that idea. When Nvidia launched the GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 boards more than a year ago, the company knew it had the fastest board on the market and wasn‚Äôt afraid to charge a premium for it; $650, to be exact.

How utterly devastating, then, when the Radeon HD 4870 launched a couple of weeks later, besting the $400 GeForce GTX 260 with a $300 price point. It‚Äôs not that ATI had snatched away the performance crown‚ÄîNvidia still had the fastest card around. But enthusiasts (especially those who actually bought one of the GeForce GTX 200-series boards) were certainly left feeling gouged when the cards immediately fell to more competitive prices. Good way to earn extra margin on a big GPU. Bad way to encourage brand loyalty.

Dealing with Video and Media Related Errors

Computers are increasingly being used as multimedia tools that allow us to watch videos, listen to music and create multimedia presentations. We are also using computers to communicate with family and friends and share videos, photos and music. Computers, with the help of the Internet, are merging into a combination of TV, radio, music player and PC all rolled into one.

In order to achieve all or some of these functions, your computer needs to be loaded with the required hardware specifications, as well as requisite software applications. These various hardware components and software programs put a burden on computer resources and at the same time increase the probability of an error. It is commonly noticed that video and media related errors are often related to problems in the executable or EXE files.

Out of these problems, the most common issue is with high CPU usage by EXE files, such as qttask.exe (QuickTime player), wdfmgr.exe (Windows Media Player), and ati2evxx.exe (ATT video card). By default, these files are configured to load at system startup. However, you don‚Äôt actually need them until you start working with the application they belong to. The best way to deal with these problems is to disable the programs from loading during system start. You can easily search for and disable these programs by using the System Configuration utility that you can launch by running the msconfig command. If you find this utility a bit complicated, you may use a reliable, third-startup programs manager tool to disable unwanted startup programs.

Many times, media and video players generate errors and cause system slow downs if you fail to update them. This is because these updates incorporate new features and patch up any bugs that make your software more efficient and secure.

Although it is essential to update, many users report errors soon after they install an update. If this happens, you may have to remove this update to resolve the issue. If you want to uninstall a Windows Media Player Update, open Add or Remove Programs, select the Show Updates checkbox, select the update you want to uninstall and then select Remove.

It is also important for you to maintain a malware-free computer. These malicious programs infect your application files and make them behave erratically. If your audio/video driver files or if the files of your media applications are infected with a virus, you may encounter errors. This is the reason why it is a good idea to run an antivirus and antispyware scan on your computer to ensure that they are not behind the errors. To be ready to combat malware, you must ensure that you have the latest antimalware tools and you must keep these tools updated with the latest definitions.

The Windows registry also plays an important role in the smooth functioning of your media applications and drivers. Any problems within the registry may cause these applications to malfunction and generate errors. To prevent issues caused by registry problems, it is imperative that you scan and clean your registry on a regular basis. Although you can do some amount of registry maintenance by using the Registry Editor (regedit) tool, it is best that you use a good registry cleaner tool for the job. Registry cleaners are recommended by many experts because of their ease-of-use, efficiency, and speed in detecting and fixing registry errors.

Fish tank PC otherwise known as the Aquarium PC Kit from Puget Systems.

PugetSystems built this system because with all the oil cooled projects out there, no one built a system that looked good and functioned well! After seeing all the other projects, They had a lot of ideas of how they could do it better and more easily. Many projects used vegetable oil, which would go rancid after a short time. The mineral oil does not have this problem, and is completely clear. PugetSystems also wanted to use an appropriate enclosure — the Toms Hardware system used a clear acrylic case, and they had to painstakingly seal each rear connector to keep the oil from leaking. They wanted to put the ports on top to solve that problem the simple way. Other people have built systems in aquariums before, but they were always oversized and square. When PugetSystems found the Eclipse System 6 Aquarium, they were excited to see an aquarium that was absolutely perfect in size — you couldn’t go any smaller. In addition, they had questions about performance and long term effects. There initial tests, which we go over below, answer the questions about cooling performance.
