In a world increasingly concerned with speed and portability, it was only natural that a company known for data storage would want to expand into a new market; by creating a fun, practical accessory that allows users to transport and share their data quickly, we’ve done just that. The key-shaped USB key that we produced is both inventive and functional, and turned out to be one of our biggest selling products of the year.

Introducing real-life gadgets that trounce some of 007’s most outrageous toys. Spies are everywhere these days, With so many secret agents–both real and fictional–in the public consciousness these days, PCWorld.com thought a short list of high-tech spy gear was in order.

1. Remote Monitoring

What do these household items have in common? They’re bugged! The Small B/W Wall Clock Camera, model C1390B24 (lower left, $276) has a black-and-white camera hidden inside, while the Air Freshener 3G Camera, model CX300MC-A (lower middle, $720) has a color camera inside plus a SIM card that lets you watch the live video feed on a 3G phone. The Power Strip Hidden Audio Monitoring Device (upper left, $1209) is also rigged with a SIM card and a microphone, so you can dial in and listen to conversations. For $100 more, you can get a version that calls you when it detects voices in the room.

2. Spy Cams

Tiny cameras that record on the sly can be hidden in all sorts of objects. Here we see (left to right) we seethe Spy Pen Camera ($30), which lets you download 640-by-480 video and audio recorded on the built-in 4GB memory straight onto your computer; the Button Camera ($129), featuring three styles of button covers with matching real buttons for the rest of your jacket or shirt; the Key Ring Spy Camera ($102) with built-in microphone; and the dressy Tie Camera ($252), which can share a power supply with the optional Covert Video Recorder ($389).

3. Cellular Jammers

Need to scramble a cellular signal and thereby render nearby cellphones’ calling capabilities useless, so your evil-empire nemesis can’t deliver his latest intelligence update to the homeland at the appointed hour? The High Power Portable Jammer (left, $205) isn’t covert, but it can scramble signals at distances of up to 60 feet away. The 3G Mini Cell Jammer (right, $199) promises to scramble cell signals for 3G, UMTS, CDMA, and GSM networks within a range of up to 32 feet.

4.Keyloggers

When you can’t crack the encryption code on some secret plans locked away in a computer file, your only other option is to identify the user’s password and use that to access to the information in unencrypted form. That’s when spies (and paranoid spouses) turn to keyloggers, which record every keystroke that a user enters on a specific computer.

5. GPS Trackers

The PTXTrak Real-Time GPS Tracking Device (left, $470) transmits the location of a car or person every 10 seconds (if driving) or every 20 feet (if walking), while you watch on a Web-based map. The Mini GPS Logger (right, $288) records and stores–on the device itself–the route, stop time, speed, direction, and altitude of a moving object. Subsequently you can retrieve the data and download it to a computer via USB.

6. Document Scanners

PlanOn’s handy document scanners do the job quickly and covertly–assuming that no one considers moving an unopened ballpoint pen rapidly across every line of text on a page to be odd. The DocuPen Xtreme X05 (top, $300) comes with 64MB of internal memory, takes MicroSD cards for expansion, and can perform Bluetooth transfers as well. The DocuPen RC810 (bottom, $170) has 8MB of memory and takes about 4 to 8 seconds to scan a full page of text.

7. Antibugging Protection

When it’s so easy to bug someone it’s hard not to be paranoid your bugged yourself. In the spy vs. spy world of gadgets and countergadgets, there are some easy ways to avoid being bugged. The PE-AJ1 Audio Jammer electronic noise generator (left, $169) can knock out any wired or wireless microphone within an area of 150 square feet (note, however, that a protected area of 150 square feet works out to a protected radius of only about 7 feet, according to the ancient spy formula A = πr 2). The KB-DD800 Multifunctional Portable Sweep Unit (right, $495) purportedly can detect bugs and cameras hidden in the room, as well as GPS trackers and wire telephone tapping.

8.Night Vision

If you’re after some night vision gear for your mission, you can choose between monoculars and binoculars. The Night Own 3×50 monocular (upper left, $450) is suitable for camping, boating or wildlife observation, as well as for espionage, while the Patrol 2X24 monocular (right, $360) is a sound entry-level model that you can attach to a tripod. If you want to go pro, consider the Ranger Digital Night Vision 5×42 binoculars (lower left, $760), with 5X magnification, a built-in LCD screen, and a rubberized body.

9. Aerial Snooping

It looks like a prop from a Batman movie, but The Bat (left, not available in stores) is a functioning drone that carries microphones, shoots photos and video, and comes equipped with sensors for detecting poisonous gases and radiation. Only 6 inches wide, it cost $10 million to develop at the University of Michigan. More down to earth (but still up in the air) is the Spy Kite (right, $46), which lets you snap photos from heights of up to 80 feet and download them to your PC via USB.

10. Phones No Longer Safe

If your mission is to spy on someone who uses a BlackBerry or an Android phone, a service called MobiStealth (left, $80 for three months) promises to enable you to monitor their location, listen to phone calls via a Web interface, and check the user’s text messages and Web history. Mobile Spy claims that its iPhone Spy software (right, $50 for three months) works in a similar manner with iPhones–but only if they’ve been jailbroken.

11. Spy Coins

Finally, all self-respecting spies need a safe way to transfer to the home office all the data they’ve acquired during a hard day of skulking around. These hollow spy coins from Dereu & Sons have been uses since the Cold War by spies to transport secret messages or suicide poisons. Now you can use them to carry a MicroSD card. Available coins include U.S. nickels (left, $30 each) and half-dollars (a significantly better deal at $25 each), British pounds (right, $33 each), and EU euros ($30 each).

Source: PCWorld.com

Apple’s iPhone 4 “Antennagate” could be the best thing that’s ever happened to the cellphone accessory market. While Apple will be keeping the cost of entry-level iPhone 4 cases low — by providing them for free, at least through September — the iPhone 4′s widely reported antenna issues could open a flood of new case buyers. That could translate to big bucks for especially clever or elegant solutions.

1.iPhone 4 accessory idea. You’re welcome, Apple.

2.Antenn-aid: 6-pack of stickers for $4.99

More at Antenn-aid.com

3. Get creative with a rubber band or sport headband

4.Gloves (Bonus: Style points)

5.Learn how to hold it the right way

If your skin doesn’t come in contact with the lower-left antenna gap, you probably don’t have this problem. So don’t touch it there, and avoid the “death grip” technique of holding your phone, and you should be fine. Steve Jobs allegedly emailed one customer last month, saying, “Just avoid holding it in that way.”

6. Get a different phone

As Apple demonstrated last week, and as many YouTube users have confirmed since then, pretty much every phone has antenna issues when held a certain way. But maybe some phones will work better for you depending on the way you hold them. This could be an iPhone 3GS, if you love Apple’s products. Or maybe you’d want to try an HTC Droid Incredible on Verizon Wireless’s network.

7.”Wait”

It’s not like you make phone calls on your iPhone anyway. Just keep texting and emailing. There will be a new iPhone in a year, and you can get that one then.

Streak. It needs no introduction, as this slate’s been gaining a lot of attention amongst gadget lovers around the world. Thanks to the UK launch last Friday, we were one of the first on this planet to procure Dell’s finalized Android 1.6 phone from O2. Yep, you heard right — Engadget’s now in possession of two Streaks, with the older one still in its original and somewhat unstable prototype state. Our new toy sports a matte “carbon” finish instead of chrome (no word on future availability; the red version’s coming in two weeks’ time), and now 399MB of RAM instead of 405MB (according to Android System Info app; it’s actually a 512MB chip). Anyhow, now that we have the real deal, there’s plenty to go through, so join us after the break to see if the Streak’s really going to start a new trend.

My(Melissa J. Perenson) experience with the Streak sums up the devices schizoid nature-is it a ginormous smartphone on steroids (not quite) or a tablet computer for your palm (closer to the mark). In the end, in spite of its unique design and appealing viability as a handheld media device, in use the Streak feels too much like last year’s Android device.

(This review will be updated as soon as Dell announces the particulars of the Streak’s availability and pricing).

The Samsung Captivate has a dazzling display and a bevy of multimedia and social networking features.

The good: The Samsung Captivate features a gorgeous Super AMOLED screen, a 1GHz processor, and 16GB of onboard memory plus an expansion slot. The Android 2.1 device also offers great call quality, full wireless options, and a HD video capture.

The bad: AT&T won’t let you sideload apps. Camera lacks flash.

The bottom line: The Samsung Captivate is easily AT&T’s best Android offering to date, delivering great performance, tons of features, and an easy-to-use interface

I stood in line and got an iPhone 4, returned it for obvious reasons (as well as a desire to use Google Voice in an integrated manner), and now am the satisfied owner of the Samsung Captivate. Overall, this is a very nice device and I am extremely pleased. Calls are clear, speaker is loud, lots of care has been taken to make this device and interface really great.

This is coming from someone who has owned many incarnations of PDA and smartphone from the original Palm devices, WinMo devices, and every version of iPhone including 4 (although this is my first Android device). The Samsung Captivate is light, fast, and beautiful, and I am happy to recommend this device for anyone who has a clue on how to use a smartphone, as this powerful hardware + Android 2.1 = lots of power and customization.

I would still recommend the iPhone 4 (or 3Gs) for someone who is not as “tech” oriented, as the Captivate occasionally slowed down if I didn’t manage background tasks myself with “ATK;” until I cleared out unneeded widgets and tweaked settings, there were occasional stutters and button feedback lags (but I don’t let stuff run willy-nilly and unchecked on my PC either, so I have no problem monitoring this myself).

So yes, I am very glad I sweet-talked that AT&T employee into selling me one of these on Friday. This phone may not yet be as famous or coveted as the iPhone, but I wonder if there will be a quiet revolution of these Galaxy S phones (since this series is now available on all major US carriers, and throughout the world). This is a very powerful phone, is fun to use, and can make and receive calls no matter how I hold it.

Over the next year, Apple will likely announce incremental upgrades to most of its existing products. It recently updated the Mac mini, and it’s likely to tweak its iPod and Mac lines over the next several months.

And as far as major overhauls or completely new gadgets go, there’s room for at least one in 2011.

Next 5 Apple Gadgets

1. iPod touch 4

Everyone thought Apple would overhaul the iPod touch — the future of the iPod business — last year, by adding a camera to it. Nope! Instead, Apple put a camcorder in the iPod nano and left the iPod touch pretty much alone.

2. Apple TV 2

The Apple TV set-top box is the weakest link in Apple’s product lineup. It’s so bad that Apple doesn’t even promote it on the front page of its web store anymore. It’s buried as an iPod accessory.

3. iPad 2

Apple’s first iPad was a good first take. But now that we’ve seen the iPhone 4, we can begin to see some of the features Apple’s iPad 2 may have. These could include…- A front-facing camera for FaceTime video chat.

- The hi-res “retina display,” which would make reading e-books and web pages even better on the iPad.

- The new flat-back glass case, perhaps. (Or a lighter metal

4.iPhone for Verizon

Enough with the excuses, Apple must sell the iPhone at Verizon Wireless, the no. 1 U.S. wireless carrier. Why? Because it’ll help Apple sell a lot more phones, and it’ll simultaneously hurt archrival Google Android, which is picking up steam fast because of its prime billing at Verizon.

So, what would an iPhone at Verizon look like? Maybe, the same as the current iPhone 4, with slightly different guts.

5. MacBook Air 2

Now that Apple’s iPad tablet is launched, it’s possible that the MacBook Air has reached the end of its line. Maybe people don’t need the extra horsepower and Mac app compatibility that comes with a MacBook in a super-portable design anymore. Maybe the iPad will suffice for most buyers. But we have to assume that as long as Apple ships Mac laptops, it’ll always want to make them thinner, smaller, and more portable. And that’s where all the lessons Apple is learning from the iPhone, iPod, and iPad could really help the MacBook lineup.

So we think Apple might come out with a new MacBook Air in the next year or so that’s so thin and light that it’s shocking, with a super-long-lasting battery, and maybe even a non-Intel chip on the inside.

It might not be an “Air,” but just a super-thin MacBook Pro. But either way, it’s silly to assume that Apple won’t apply its miniaturization lessons to its Mac laptop lineup.

It’s arguably the gadget of the decade, and if you’ve not held one in your hands and felt its sleek looks and experienced its amazing capabilities, you’re missing out on something special. And even if you’re not a fan of Apple, you have to admit that the iPhone is one of a kind, and that’s why you have thousands of third party developers rushing to come up with applications and accessories for this phone. Some of them are useful, others interesting, and some just downright hilarious. If you’re looking for a list of must-have funny iPhone case, covers, Holders, read on:

iPhone Retro Holder A creation by some funny iphone user.

iHand: Check out Apple’s latest accessory for the iPhone – it’s called the iHand. The color options look so racist. Its just a spoof.

iPhone Retro Cassette Cover “ It’s basically a boxy case for your iPhone designed to look like a cassette tape, which it does, remarkably well. But the makers have gone the extra mile, well maybe just a few extra hundred feet, and have included a clear plastic cassette tape case which doubles as a display stand. Retroriffic! As for pricing? Dunno. You have to be a registered wholesaler first, but I’m going to assume you can get the price down if you’re willing to shell out for 10,000 or so of them.

iPhone Pencil Stand: If you’re looking for DIY projects related to your iPhone, this is it – use a few pencils to build your own cool iPhone stand instead of shelling out good money for those that other people make.

iPhone Dots Gloves: Never too cold to use your phone. Keep your fingers warm and still use your iPhone! These gloves have conducting tips that help your touch-screen devices register your fingertips even though they’re covered!

iPhone video stand that fits in your wallet: The BatRest is a neat little folding cradle / dock / stand for watching video or other streaming media in landscape format on your iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch or G1 at your desk, on the plane, or anywhere else. The BatRest is extremely thin and can fit perfectly in a credit card slot in your wallet.

iPhone Thongs: Ok, they’re not really iPhone accessories, but you must admit that for the iGeek or the iFanatic, anything that says iPhone is a must-buy. So if you’re looking to attract one’s attention, this is a must-have item.

Playstation iPhone Case: This is a felt Playstation iPhone case made by Etsy user rabbitrampage. As you can see (provided you’re not rocking dualie eyepatches) it was very well constructed. And whenever she actually has one in stock, it’ll run you $20 — plus another $7 per controller. Still, damn cute. I’d even consider buying one if I didn’t just get a new purse.

Any iPhone case missed?

Don’t get too excited about the 3D element of Sony’s WX5 and TX9 snappers—the smallprint uses the phrase “3D-style viewing effects” so we suspect it’ll be a bit of a, to use a technical phrase, mish-mash.

The single-lens 3D system works by capturing a rapid-fire burst of 100 frames as you sweep the camera around, which the software then fashions into a single stereoscopic 3D image—which you’ll have to view on something capable on displaying it. The viewfinders won’t. Here’s the full press release. The cameras arrive from September 2010, if you’re in need of a new ladylike point-and-shoot job for your tightest pocket. [Sony]

One Lens, Three Dimensions

To create 3D images, cameras traditionally use a dual-lens system, with the two lenses spaced about as far apart as a pair of human eyeballs. After shooting, two slightly offset images are overlaid, and a visible 3D effect is achieved by using one of many presentation options (among them, red/blue anaglyph filters, different methods of polarization, or viewing the images with the naked eye on a specially treated screen).

The WX5 and TX9 work around the dual-lens system with a creative rejiggering of Sony’s Sweep Panorama mode. Using the cameras’ 3D Sweep Panorama setting, you press the shutter button once, pan across a scene, and the camera stitches together a panoramic image that can be viewed in 3D.

Cyber-shot WX5, TX9, and T99: Other Specs and Features

The 12-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 offers a 5X optical zoom lens (24mm to 120mm in 35mm film equivalent), and it offers a few interesting modes beyond its 3D-shooting capabilities and Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode.

Two brand-new modes are in the mix. Sony is touting the new camera’s Superior Auto mode, which acts similarly to the company’s Handheld Twilight mode. In Superior Auto mode, the camera overlays multiple images taken in rapid succession at different exposure settings to create a noise-free photo with greater dynamic range.

Another new mode is called Sweep Multi Angle, which creates a multiple-angle image by panning the camera across a scene. After shooting is complete, you can change the viewing perspective of the photo during playback by tilting the camera from side to side.

Despite lacking manual controls, the WX5 offers more-granular image controls than a typical point-and-shoot, thanks to a stable of excellent shooting modes. For example, Background Defocus mode lets you create shallow depth-of-field effects without manual aperture settings, and the included Handheld Twilight and Backlight Correction HDR modes are designed for tricky lighting situations. The DSC-WX5 also captures 1080i/60fps AVCHD video at 17 mbps. The WX5 is slated for September release at $300.

The slim, touchscreen-operated Cyber-shot DSC-TX9 offers a 4X optical-zoom lens (25mm to 100mm), a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3.5-inch-diagonal touchscreen, and the ability to capture 1080i AVCHD video.

Like the WX5, it offers Superior Auto, 3D Sweep Panorama, Background Defocus, Sweep Multi Angle, Intelligent Sweep Panorama, Handheld Twilight, and Backlight Correction HDR modes. The TX9 is also dueto appear in September, at a price of $400.

At the lower end of the features spectrum is the similar-style Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99, which offers a 14-megapixel CCD sensor and a 4X optical zoom lens (25mm to 100mm).

It doesn’t possess the feature-heavy firepower of the WX5 or the TX9, but the T99 does offer a Sweep Panorama mode and 720p high-definition video recording as MPEG-4 files. The T99 will be available in September for $250.

Need a break from your laptop? These productivity phones offer a lot more than the ability to make calls. Here are the 10 best smartphones available today.

1. Apple 32GB iPhone 4

The Apple iPhone 4 ($199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB version, with a two-year contract from AT&T) is everything that a new piece of technology should be: It’s innovative, attractive, and ahead of its competition. In comparison, previous iPhone upgrades seem inconsequential–that’s how much iPhone 4 brings to the table. But one serious design flaw keeps it from being perfect.

2. HTC EVO 4G

HTC has struck gold again with the HTC EVO 4G ($200 with a two-year contract from Sprint), which is easily the best smartphone available on Sprint and is second to the HTC Droid Incredible (Verizon) as the best smartphone available today. The EVO 4G packs powerful specs and a lot of features in a slick, stylish design. The biggest drawback is that not everyone will get to experience 4G connectivity, one of the phone’s best features at launch–yet they’ll still have to pay for it.

3. Motorola Droid X

The follow-up to Motorola’s wildly popular Droid on Verizon, the Droid X ($200 with a two-year service contract from Verizon; available July 15) is one of the hottest phones to debut this summer. Its specs outshine those on the other Droid phones available on the network, but it falters a bit when it comes to performance. Nonetheless, the Droid X is one of the top phones to debut this summer, on a par with both the HTC EVO 4G and the iPhone 4.

4. HTC Droid Incredible

The best of the Droids on Verizon, the Droid Incredible ($200 with a two-year contract from Verizon) impresses with its speedy user interface, gorgeous AMOLED display and fun Sense user interface. Other than some minor design qualms, this smartphone truly lives up to its name.

Design-wise, the Droid Incredible appears fairly similar to the Nexus One, but it is essentially a CDMA version of the HTC Desire, which launched last February in Barcelona, Spain. The Droid Incredible has an 8-megapixel camera (as opposed to the Nexus One and Desire’s 5-megapixel shooters). The Droid Incredible also has a strange rubberdized “topographic” battery cover, which I could have done without. While the Incredible is lighter, it doesn’t feel as solid as the Nexus One.

5. Google Nexus One

The coveted “Google phone” is finally here, but the HTC Nexus One ($180 with a two-year contract with T-Mobile, or $530 unlocked; prices as of January 12, 2010) isn’t quite the superphone that Google intimated it would be. It lacks some valuable features–like multitouch and Outlook calendar syncing–that we’ve seen on competing models, and the Android keyboard can be difficult to use. That said, the Nexus One’s speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor definitely sets it apart from the Android pack in performance.

6. Motorola Droid

The first time you pick up the Motorola Droid ($200 with a two-year contract from Verizon; price as of 10/28/09), you’ll notice its solid feel and heft–there’s a lot going on behind the crisp, 3.7-inch touchscreen. Making good use of Android 2.0′s new features, the Droid is a powerful Web surfing and communications tool that has a chance of living up to its hype. The Droid’s biggest flaw, however, is in its hardware design: The keyboard is shallow and flat, which can make typing uncomfortable.

7. Apple 32GB iPhone 3GS

It would be easy to dismiss the Apple iPhone 3GS as an inconsequential hardware upgrade. But to do so would underestimate how much, collectively, the phone’s new features augment the iPhone experience. With the iPhone 3GS, Apple solidifies its leadership position in a crowded smartphone landscape.

8. BlackBerry Bold 9700

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry Bold 9700 ($200 with a two-year T-Mobile contract; price as of 11/4/09) is the finest BlackBerry to date, combining the best of the BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the BlackBerry Bold 9000 in a slim and refined package. People looking for a major update to the original Bold might be disappointed, but BlackBerry fans will appreciate the handset’s subtle design tweaks and upgrades.

9. Palm Pre Plus

The Palm Pre Plus ($150 with a two-year contract from Verizon; price as of 1/20/10) is really more of an update of the original Pre on Sprint than a completely new product. Even so, the subtle hardware tweaks combined with Verizon’s speedy network makes it an overall improvement from its predecessor. Some quirks remain, however, with the keyboard design and the sluggishness of the software.

10. Motorola Cliq

The Motorola Cliq ($200 with a two-year contract from T-Mobile) caught my attention because of its sleek design and its innovative MotoBlur overlay for Android. Overall, the new features lived up to my expectations, and I applaud Motorola for doing something different to separate itself from the Android pack. The Cliq isn’t perfect, however: Its camera disappoints, and it doesn’t ship with the latest version of Android.

Geeks, who have been around for long enough, remember their first hard-drives. Some remember their first gigabyte, others remember forty megabytes while even some remember luggage-sized 5 meg drives. It continually shocks us when newer and smaller storage is made available, and we get all giggly when it happens.

No exception, these little drives are the smallest we’ve ever seen. Barely bigger than the tip of your pinky, and less than 4mm thick, it’s positively small.

1. Super Talent Elite Swivel

Available in capacities of 1GB to 16GB, this mini-size model measures just 12mm by 29.5mm, and is 6.5mm thick. The USB connector swivels out from the nickel-clad device for easy hookups, and tucks away for safe-keeping. A ring loop lets you attach the device to a key ring or lanyard.

2. Lexar JumpDrive FireFly

Physically, the Lexar JumpDrive FireFly is the smallest drive in Lexar’s USB lineup. Each of its four colors corresponds to a capacity: 2GB (black), 4GB (white), 8GB (charcoal), and 16GB (red). The drive has a slide-off plastic top that might be tough to keep track of, but this top does have a small loop through which you can hook a lanyard.

3. Verbatim Tuff ‘n’ Tiny

Verbatim’s mini drives live up to their name, with a candy-colored plastic enclosure around the USB connector. Each drive measures 12.7mm by 30.2mm and is just 1.5mm thick. The drives are available in four colors, each matching a different capacity: black for 16GB, purple for 8GB, green for 4GB, and orange for 2GB. The lanyard hold is plastic, and the drive includes a key-ring loop.

4. Super Talent Pico

Similar in size and form to the Verbatim Tuff ‘n’ Tiny, the Pico is billed as water-resistant, too. This capless model comes in chrome, gold-plated, and nickel-plated varietals, in capacities from 2GB to 32GB.

5. Transcend JetFlash T5

Available in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB variations (in orange, white, and red, respectively), this drive has a slide-out USB connector. It includes Transcend’s JetFlash Elite software for security and data backup.
