Yes read it right! Spam becomes a lot worse when you try to unsubscribe from advertisement mails, because the spammers then get to know your email address is real.

If you want to become a big spammer you will need email addresses: millions of them. In order to get them at the lowest cost, spammers use various techniques which automatically search the net for addresses, or use brute force and dictionary attacks to guess typical mail address. Such as strings with common first and last names.

How spammer gets to know about email is active or not?

In order to check the addresses it has found, the spammer uses a peculiarity of the email protocol SMTP, which always answers wrongly with an error message. If there is no error message, the address is known to exist. However to find out if his mails are also being read, the spammer must provoke you to react. Therefore, many messages have fake ‘Remove’ or ‘Unsubscribe’ links which only register the fact that you opened the mail, which means you have seen the spam ad mail.

How you get more spam?

If the spammer has verified your address once, he can start making money from it because he knows you are a potential buyer. Not only does he then send you more spam than before, but also sells your data to other spammers and cycle goes on.

Of the 107 trillion emails sent in 2010, 89%were spam. That means 95 trillion spam mails every year or 262 billion every day.

Technology has advanced at a rapid pace, much faster than we can keep up with it. But that doesn’t imply that we cannot try to understand it and learn it, because when we don’t get technology, we fall far behind. Lawyers were never really required to know technology, and even if their cases involved technical details, they would hire an expert to help with this aspect. But today, technology has made it possible to do so much more in very little time – gadgets and devices help lawyers in more ways than one.

Cyber lawyers are a relatively new breed; they evolved because technology evolved and because people began to misuse the technology for nefarious purposes. Today, there are laws relating to data encryption, child pornography, data transfer, data privacy, online plagiarism, and various other forms of cybercrime. However, there are still many loopholes that can be exploited by those who really know technology, and this is the foremost reason why cyber lawyers must understand technology.

Cyber lawyers are not really required to have any kind of special qualifications; they’re just lawyers who happen to be interested in cyber law, its implications and its cases. However, if they venture into cyber law without knowing all there is to know about technology, they’re not going to be very good at their job. If cyber lawyers want to rule the roost and win cases in their domain, they must be familiar with the ins and outs of technology.

If we take a look at those who know the most about cyberspace, we find that it’s the criminals – the hackers, the virus authors, the scammers, the con artists – who are familiar with its ins and outs. The law is on their trail, but often far behind. This is because those in law enforcement do not think like criminals. So if cyber lawyers want to get inside the minds of online crooks and know how they think, they need to know technology as well as, if not better than them.

As I said at the beginning of this article, technology is advancing faster than we can keep up with it. However, cyber lawyers must keep up to date with the latest advances in cyber technology if they are to continue to be relevant in their field. Cyberspace develops rapidly, and criminals and people who exploit this virtual world are always abreast of all that can be done with the technology that creates it. So for cyber lawyers to be one step ahead of them, they must continue to improve their knowledge of technology as and when advances are made. This is a field where the learning never stops, where every day brings new knowhow and new challenges, and where innovation can become obsolete in no time at all.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen sues Apple, Google, Facebook, AOL, eBay, Netflix, Yahoo!, Staples, OfficeMax, Office Depot, and YouTube over patents, charging them with infringing patents filed more than a decade ago.

Microsoft‘s co-founder Paul Allen has filed suit against nine companies over patent violations. Through his current firm, Interval Licensing LLC, Allen is suing Apple, Google, AOL, Facebook, ebay, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo, and YouTube (which is a subsidiary of Google). The claims involve four separate patents, most of which cover integral parts of how the companies named do business. For example, one patent allows site suggestions for consumers based on things they’re currently viewing, while another allows related articles to be delivered while reading news. All in all, it sounds like Allen’s patents — if they’re indeed found to cover these technologies — are seriously vast. The suit, which was filed today, does not name any specific amount of damages he is seeking. Allen, who is one of the richest people in the world with an estimated worth of over $13 billion, recently pledged to donate over half of his wealth to philanthropic causes after Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates called on the world’s billionaires to do so.
