Container cargo tracking occurs when someone observes or watches the shipping of a cargo vessel (that which holds the possessions or goods) as it leaves from the place of origin to the cargo’s destination. Cargo containers are large boxes (often metal) that are placed in massive shipping vessels and shipped to an intended place. “Container cargo tracking,” refers to the monitoring of shipping containers by way of the Apple iPhone.

Apple iPhones contain global positioning system (GPS) capability, which means they can send signals to and receive signals from satellites that are placed all across the globe. These signals allow you to see where any given object is at any given time on earth. All that is needed for the IPhone GPS capability to function is a GPS mobile phone application. Mobile phone applications often comes as downloads. With your IPhone, you can actually download a mobile phone application from the Internet directly onto your IPhone! The GPS application serves as a window or “server” by which the GPS function operates.

How does TrackThis work? First, go to the TrackThis website (http://www.usetrackthis.com/) on your IPhone and place your tracking code in the section labeled “start tracking.” You can choose a nickname for your package or not. There are other features on the page, such as deciding whether or not you will track your packages on facebook and twitter as well.

The advantages of TrackThis are that 1) you can track all of your packages in the same place because of the various carriers the mobile phone application can track, and 2) you can track your packages by way of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter.

GTrax is another container cargo tracking mobile phone application put out by MIS Development and Refresh Media that tracks cargo containers in sea vessels to aid mariners in ocean shipping. GTrax uses certain antennas to find a commercial vessel in the water and send a signal back to your iPhone as to the location of the cargo container and vessel carrier. Once the antennas find the commercial vessel within the range, the iPhone will show the vessel location via Google maps.

Both TrackThis and gTrax are examples of container cargo trackers that have been turned into mobile phone applications for your Apple iPhone. Google recently started rolling out a new Gmail contacts interface that includes

New sorting features,
Keyboard shortcuts,
Improved labels,
and more.

There are also a few new changes to the overall look of Gmail that makes it easier to quickly access your contacts and tasks list.

Let’s have a look at the new features:

New Inbox

At the top of the Gmail inbox is a new “Mail” link that takes you to your inbox when you click on it. Strangely, the Mail link does not include a count of your current unread e-mail. For that, you’ll still have to refer to the Inbox link below.

Getting Serious with Contacts

The biggest change Gmail has implemented is a completely overhauled look to the contacts manager (click on the image above to see how it’s laid out now). Your contacts are now organized horizontally across the screen similar to how your e-mail looks in Gmail. At a glance, you can see a contact’s name, e-mail address, phone number, address, and the names of any groups you’ve assigned to your contact.

The left contacts panel has also been overhauled.At the top is a button to add a new contact, and below that are links to your contact groups as well as the option to create new groups.

There’s also a link to a list of the people you contact most often, and another link for any contacts that are not assigned to any of your groups.

So if you know how to use Gmail, now you should automatically feel comfortable in Contacts too. And you’ll see a bunch of the features you’ve requested, including:

The revamped Gmail is currently rolling out and you should see the new interface soon if you haven’t received it already. However, Google Apps users won’t be seeing the Gmail refresh just yet. Google says it is “actively working on making domain-specific features work well in the new interface.” But the company promises Google Apps users will get the new features soon.

Cross-platform apps such as Firefox Portable Edition, OpenOffice.org Portable, and Audacity Portable will give your phone full PC capabilities.

Mobile computing has long been dominated by laptop computers, but powerful new smartphones such as the Apple iPhone 4 and the various Android phones–including the new Motorola Droid X–are rapidly becoming the portable computing devices of choice. This shift, of course, is primarily due to the immense number of apps written for both types of phones.

However, a lot of tasks, such as word processing and Web browsing, are still more easily accomplished using the larger keyboard and monitor of a traditional laptop or PC. Consequently, most mobile professionals continue to lug around a bulky laptop in addition to their smartphone.

Here are some ways to take advantage of your smart phone.

1.USB Drive Mode

All you need is your smartphone, the USB sync cable that works with it, and the right selection of portable apps, as well as access to a desktop or laptop PC–even if it’s just as a guest.

First, plug your phone into the computer using the phone’s sync cable. Next, select USB Drive mode. This process should work with all operating systems, most smartphones, and any other type of phone that uses a sync cable. (If your phone doesn’t use a sync cable, you’re out of luck.)

Once the handset is in USB Drive mode, you can use the PC’s file explorer–or the Finder on a Mac–to browse your phone’s internal memory as if it were a flash drive. For example, you can run the Portable Edition of the Mozilla Firefox browser from your phone, saving all your bookmarks, preferences, and add-ons directly to your phone’s internal storage. It leaves no data behind on the host PC, and you don’t have to install anything on the computer.

If you’d like to work as if you were at your desk, try OpenOffice.org Portable. Another useful app is the portable, cross-browser RoboForm2Go, a password manager that is secure and encrypted. For another good source of useful portable apps, check out the Portable Freeware Collection.

3.Use Mac OS X Portable Apps

Mac users can choose from many portable apps, too, including the Firefox Web browser, Adium instant messaging client, and Thunderbird e-mail client.

FreeSMUG (Free OpenSource Software Mac User Group) has a goodly selection of Mac-ready portable apps. You can also find lots of apps on the SourceForge OS X Portable Applications page.

4.Use Linux Portable Apps

Linux enthusiasts who are smartphone users can get in on the portable-app action, as well.

Pendrivelinux is the go-to site for step-by-step tutorials that provide a multitude of portable options for many of the most popular distributions, including Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS.

Running a full-blown Linux OS like Ubuntu from your smartphone is probably the most powerful and customizable way to run portable desktop apps. You can access hundreds of software packages through the Synaptic package manager. Additionally, using portable apps allows you to create a system rescue option for disaster recovery.

On top of that, you can also run many Windows-based portable apps on Linux machines that have Wine (a Linux program that simulates a Windows environment) or Crossover (the for-pay, professionally supported version of Wine) installed. Your mileage may vary, but I have had success running PortableApps.com’s Firefox Portable Edition in Wine on Ubuntu 10.04.

Whats new in Firefox 4 Beta? Visual Tour

The next version of Firefox looks a lot like Google Chrome, with tabs moved above the navigation bar and a single button that replaces the menu bar. That doesn’t mean the two browsers look and feel the same. But more importantly to the average user, Firefox 4 offers a refreshed layout and appearance. Here’s a look at some of the highlights.

New Menu

If you’re a Windows Vista or Windows 7 user, one of the first things you’re likely to notice is that the menus have moved to a single orange Firefox button on the upper-left side. (Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows XP users will continue to see the regular menu layout across the top of the screen.)

Mozilla has also merged the stop and reload functions into one button on the far left. Users of any operating system will see this new feature.

Tabs on Top

Taking a cue from Google Chrome, Firefox 4 beta now has the browser tabs pointing upward by default instead of hanging down from the top of the window. This is a great addition to Firefox, as it helps to maximize screen real estate for the Web page you’re viewing. Mozilla says that this feature is available only for the Windows beta right now, but that it will be rolled out to the Mac and Linux versions in the future.

If tabs on top are not your thing, you can switch back to the more traditional Firefox tab layout by right-clicking the toolbar and deselecting the Tabs on top option. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can also go to the Firefox button on the upper-left side and select Customize, Tabs On Top.

Bookmarks

The bookmarks menu has moved to a new bookmarks button on the upper right.

Though the bookmarks layout has changed, the functionality is the same: To access your bookmarks, just click the star and select an item from the drop-down menu.

Switch Tabs in the Awesome Bar

If you like to keep numerous tabs open at a time, Firefox now lets you search for the tab you want right from the Awesome Bar. This is a great alternative to cycling through all your tabs with keyboard shortcuts or your mouse.

To access the switch-tabs function, just place your cursor in the Awesome Bar (that’s the URL entry field for you Firefox newbies) and start typing name of the site or page you want to access. The Awesome Bar will start showing you a few options for past and current sites. One of the top options should be the tab you’re looking for, and will be marked as ‘Switch to tab’ (see the screenshot). Just select that option and press Enter, and Firefox will switch to the tab for you.

Privacy, Crash Protection, and HTML 5

In addition to the obvious new user features, Firefox 4 beta 1 also has a few added features under the hood. For starters, Mozilla has introduced crash protection for your Flash, QuickTime, and Silverlight plug-ins; this means that if the Flash Player crashes in one tab, for instance, it won’t take the entire browser down with it.

Firefox 4 beta is also getting more HTML 5 capability, including the ability to display CSS Transitions, such as a Web page background that gradually shifts from white to black.

Mozilla has bumped up the privacy protection, as well, by closing a loophole that could allow a malicious script to sort through your browser history, exposing you to identity theft.

Verdict

Overall, Firefox 4′s new look and added features seem promising, and it will be interesting to see what other features Mozilla adds to future beta releases of Firefox 4.

I use Chrome for day-to-day browsing, but Firefox 4 beta has me considering a switch. The user interface, I think, is the most important part of any Web browser, and Firefox’s looks cleaner and more modern than ever. Also, Firefox veterans strongly attached to the old interface can bring it back with a few menu options. It’s frustrating that certain things that would be easy to improve–like the wasted space next to the menu button, and tabs that aren’t really on top–aren’t there yet, but this is a beta. I’m hoping Mozilla hasn’t finished cleaning up its interface.

Your browser will automatically fill in the “www.” and “.com” parts of the address.

Middle-click to open a link in a new tab: Middle-clicking a link (that is, clicking it with the scrollwheel) will cause it to open in a new tab. Middle-clicking a folder containing multiple bookmarks will cause all of them to open in new tabs.

Improve a site’s printer friendliness: At most Websites, the “printer-friendly” versions of the content are pretty awful. So head over to PrintWhatYouLike.com, and pick exactly which page elements you want to keep in your hard copy.
